Odin Sphere is a game created by Vanillaware and published by Atlus, released on May 17th, 2007 (Japan) and May 22nd, 2007 (America) for the Sony Playstation 2. It is a 2-D side-scrolling RPG. It's also fantasy/action, and draws many elements from Norse mythology. This is Vanillaware's 2nd game, the first being Princess Crown, a japan-only game released in 1997. Many condiser Odin Sphere is to be "spiritual sequel" of sorts, as they're very similar in gameplay and storytelling styles.

The game is told through a series of books, being read by a girl named Alice. Each book tells the story of a different character. At first, only one book is open to you, but when you finish one book, another one becomes available. There are five playable characters, (Gwendolyn, Cornelius, Mercedes, Oswald, and Velvet, all played in that order.) and in the very last book, you play as all five instead of just one.

Each character has different fighting styles, but all of them share a thing in common. They all fight with weapons called psyphers, which grow stronger by absorbing phozons, or the souls of the dead. The psyphers have their own levels and experenice points, and your attack power grows with the weapons. Your health points also have their own levels, and you must raise them by eating food or at restaurants. The gameplay levels are broken up into stages, and each stage is timed. If you fight well, you'll get a good score and more bonus items with it. Even if you get a bad score, you will always get the stages featured item at the end of the stage. However, the scores are only for the purpose of getting extra items, and the game doesn't keep track of your scores, so getting perfect scores all the time isn't needed, nor worth it. Each stage is a circle, so you can run around and get behind the enemy if you wish. That part is a bit weird, but hey, it's useful.
